IELTS Band Scores: How they are calculated?

What is IELTS?

IELTS or the Overseas English Language testing System is taken by those who reside in non-English speaking countries and wish to study or work in English speaking countries. This is vital as it is a requirement for abroad visa applications and institution of higher education applications. A good IELTS score will make you eligible for top universities while with a low IELTS score you have to settle for a lower ranked university.

IELTS Exam Format

There are two types of IELTS exams within Training - General and Academic Training. Students wishing to study at universities abroad take the academic exam and those wishing to work or undertake work abroad take the general education exam. In these two IELTS exams type, the Speaking and Listening tasks parts are the same while the Writing and Reading sections are dissimilar from each other.

IELTS Overall Score Calculator

We now know how to calculate the score in each section. Now let's see how the overall IELTS score is calculated. The first step is to take the average of all the section scores – reading, speaking, writing and listening. For example, take these sample scores and use the IELTS Score Calculator-

We now know how to calculate the IELTS band score in each task part. Now let's see how the IELTS score band is calculated totally.

  • Listening - 6.5
  • Reading     - 6.5
  • Writing - 5.0
  • Speaking - 8.0

Average score
= 6.5+6.5+5.0+8.0/4
= 26/4
= 6.5

Therefore, the overall IELTS score calculator is 6.5.
Now let's get to the tricky part. Sometimes the average may not reach 0.5. In this case, you must round it to the nearest decimal place.

  • Listening - 6.5
  • Reading - 6.5
  • Writing - 5
  • Speaking – 7

Average score
= 6.5+6.5+5.0+7.0/4
= 25/4
= 6.25

Here the average IELTS band score is 6.25 which can be rounded up to band 6.5. If the average IELTS band score would have been 6.75, the IELTS score would be rounded to band 7.

Is Your IELTS Score Good, Okay Or Bad?

If you are an overseas student planning to study abroad, you should be aware that a good IELTS score means admission to a good university abroad. But do you really know if your IELTS score is good enough? An IELTS score between 7 and 9 is considered a good IELTS score, while a score of 5 or 6 indicates that you have obtained an "OK" IELTS score. An IELTS score below 5 is generally considered a bad IELTS score.

Getting the IELTS Band Score You Need

An IELTS exam is divided into 4 sections i.e. Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The English language test includes a variety of questions, such as MCQ, True or False, Appropriate Sentences, Completing Sentences, and more. To get the desired IELTS score, you must first be aware of the IELTS scoring plan.
You get 1 point for each correct answer and the total number of points determines your group's score. In addition to counting points, you need to keep in mind the target points you want to score and start preparing for it. To get the IELTS group scores you need, you need to practice every day, study your vocabulary, read newspapers and articles, work on your confidence, pay attention to the listening part, and do at least 2-3 times a day. Listen to the recording. Check the words carefully and check what you have written so far.

Improve IELTS Score

How Long Will It Take To Improve My IELTS Score?

It all depends on your dedication and commitment to the same. There are many factors that contribute to the process of improving your IELTS score, as you must first be aware of your strengths and weaknesses, determine what brings you the lowest score, your current level, your score level, study strategies and your studies, and a further challenging factor is determining what scores you need for different universities. However, it has been reported that an average of up to 3 months of study is required to improve up to half of the groups in IELTS.

Quick Guidelines to Improve Your Scores

To improve your scores, you need to focus on all aspects of your language skills. You can’t just focus on the reading part and skip the rest. For example, if you want to improve your writing skills, you will need to read more to expand your vocabulary and grammar and listen more to get different ideas and opinions. Similarly, when you practice listening, you automatically learn speaking, writing, and reading skills, as listening improves your vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension of complex topics.
